Thermal Ablation

Thermal ablation treatments are revolutionary, minimally invasive and designed to treat varicose veins quickly and effectively, with little or no pain. These clinically proven outpatient procedures are designed to get you back on your feet as fast as possible, usually in less than one day!

Vein closure using thermal ablation can be performed one of two ways: radiofrequency ablation or endovenous laser treatment. Both vein closure techniques use heat to seal the damaged veins, redirecting the blood flow to other, healthy leg veins.

Dr. Arturo Marchand is highly skilled and experienced in both methods of thermal ablation. Based on your specific vein care needs, Dr. Marchand will work with you to determine your best vein treatment option.

VNUS Closure™ procedure

During the VNUS Closure™ procedure, the patient is placed under oral sedation. A small, sterile catheter is inserted into the diseased vein. Using radiofrequency ablation, the catheter quickly heats the vein, causing it to collapse and seal shut. The blood flow is redirected to the remaining, healthy veins. The procedure is performed in segments, and is usually completed in only a few minutes.

Following the procedure, a bandage is placed on the insertion site, and a compression stocking is used to aid healing. You may be encouraged to refrain from strenuous activity for a period of time. Most patients resume normal activities within one day.

Most patients report minimal to no scarring, bruising or swelling. A study on post-closure patients who remained free of venous reflux for one year revealed that 92% were still reflux-free after five years.

EVLT closure procedure

EVLT stands for endovenous laser treatment - a minimally invasive alternative to surgical stripping used to treat damaged veins quickly and effectively.

Before the EVLT procedure, the damaged vein path is mapped out using ultrasound. The procedure itself begins after the patient is placed under oral sedation. A small insertion is made in the leg, usually around the knee. A catheter is then used to insert laser fiber into the varicose vein.

Using a targeted beam of laser energy, the diseased vein is quickly and safely sealed shut, diverting blood flow to the surrounding, healthy veins.

The procedure usually takes about an hour. You will be encouraged to walk around a bit immediately afterwards to get your blood flowing and reduce the risk of complications. Some bruising and swelling may occur, but these conditions are alleviated with the proper use of bandages and compression stockings for one to two weeks after the procedure.

Endovenous laser treatment has a 93% success rate and patients typically resume normal activities within one day.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Ambulatory phlebectomy is an office-based, outpatient surgical procedure for removing surface varicose veins. The objective is to completely remove the diseased veins from the body, segment by segment.

Using local or regional anesthesia, the physician creates tiny punctures in the leg. Because even damaged veins are very collapsible, the physician is able to pull the veins out through incisions so tiny that stitches are not required. Your body will divert blood flow to your remaining, healthy veins.

After the procedure, a bandage and compression stocking are applied and the patient can return home. Post-operative pain and swelling is typically minimal, especially if the compression stocking is worn as directed (typically one week). Patients may resume normal, non-strenuous activities the same day.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a technique that is mainly used to treat spider veins or smaller, surface varicose veins less than 1-2mm in diameter. Sclerotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for spider veins.

A sclerosing solution is injected into the vein at various intervals, irritating the lining of the vein. The vein lining then swells and sticks together, effectively closing up the vein. Sclerotherapy can be uncomfortable for brief periods. As the solution replaces the blood in the veins, there will be a cramping sensation for 1 to 2 minutes.

Sclerotherapy usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, and may require multiple sessions. In general, spider veins respond to treatment in one to two weeks. The body eventually absorbs the fibrous tissue of the former vein.

With the use of compression stockings, the patient can resume normal activities the next day.
